favorite books for halloween

Happy first day of October, friends!

October is easily our favorite month of the year. It’s officially socially acceptable to take down 4 bowls of chili a day, visit 10+ pumpkin patches, eat and drink all things pumpkin, decorate pumpkins, and best of all - dress up for Halloween costume parties.

To gear up for every holiday, we read allll the themed stories. So this month we’ll be reading all of the spooky, scary, ghostly stories. Take a peek at some of our absolute favorites! Not only are these stories super fun for the littles, the cover illustrations are absolutely adorable, which makes them (and me) so happy!

If you don’t have these books in your library already, feel free to click the title of each book as I list it - this will take you directly to Amazon to purchase! Easy peasy.

1. Goodnight Goon: A beloved classic gets a kind-hearted send up in this utterly monsterized parody; energetic art and a hilarious text will have kids begging to read this again and again. Since Goodnight Moon is such a favorite in our house, we were excited to see they put a fun, spooky twist on it!

2. Gilbert the Ghost: Gilbert goes to ghost school like all the other ghosts, but he's a special ghost: he doesn't like to screech in a scary way, he doesn't want to haunt and was always polite. What will happen to Gilbert when he's sent by the principal of school to the Abandoned Tower?

3. You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie: With adorable illustrations, shaped cutouts, and raised elements, You’re My Little Pumpkin Pie is a sweet board book to share with your little one. We also have this book in the Valentine’s Day version too, and my kids absolutely love it - my oldest pretty much has it memorized now!

4. Little Blue Truck’s Halloween: Beep! Beep! It’s Halloween! Little Blue Truck is picking up his animal friends for a costume party. Lift the flaps in this large, sturdy board book to find out who’s dressed up in each costume! This is actually our favorite book out of all of the Little Blue Truck series. And yes, we have them all.

5. EEK! Halloween!: A book by Sandra Boynton. Need I really say anymore?

6. What Was I Scared Of?: Perfect for Halloween, this splendidly silly story about a narrator terrorized by an empty pair of pants (which happens to be equally terrified of the narrator) works perfectly well the rest of the year, too, delivering a timeless message about fear and tolerance to boot. Scaredy-pants of all ages will quiver with delight! Added bonus because this book has GLOW IN THE DARK elements. Sold.

7. The Scariest Book Ever: Reader beware! This is the scariest book ever! Many delights, such as surprises after the page turn, an alarmist narrator, and punch lines to anticipate make this book a scream for both kids and parents.

8. Don’t Push The Button! A Halloween Treat: Not sure if your kids read the original Don’t Push The Button! But my kids do, and they are OBSESSED. So this one has a fun, scary, trick-or-treating twist and it’s absolutely adorable.

9. Vampire Bite: In this interactive board book, your kids will love pulling the tabs to make Victor the vampire show off his scary Halloween costume by snapping with his teeth! One of my sons favorites! Even as I sit here writing this, he keeps getting excited just seeing the cover of the book on the computer screen lol.

11. Vampirina Ballerina: I mean, if you have a little ballerina in the house (or even if not!) this is a must. HOW ADORABLE is this cover? It's a challenge for any little girl to be a ballerina, but even more so if you happen to be a vampire like Vampirina. This book goes through the difficulties of being a vampire ballerina and it’s way too cute.

12. How To Make Friends With A Ghost: This book gives you a few friendly tips on how to become friends with a ghost! If you follow these few simple steps, you'll see how a ghost friend will lovingly grow up and grow old with you. Such a good story on friendship! And proving that ghosts are friendly ;)
